ART
GALLERY
This is just some of the
art that fills the Darkness Rises books. You can click on the images
for a larger picture.
As you can see, I have
the fortune of working with some truly fantastic artists. See their
work and some comments from me, below.

Do you recall the
skeleton Berren first encountered when they first went to the
Spectral Plane? Here he is looking highly ceremonial.
Horsley (http://www.ralphhorsley.co.uk/)
"Wearing
a long flowing white robe, the skeleton gleamed with soft purple
light and where it walked, amethyst footsteps glimmered for
a moment before fading. The skeleton had a bleached-white skull
and gleaming embers of purple light smouldered in its eye sockets.
Berren felt his heart lurch in surprise, and he saw Alain take
a step backward in horror. They exchanged startled glances.
The young priest's face was marked with fear. What have I got
myself into? he seemed to say."

Remember when Berren
was first taken through the streets of Kethak? This was the
Frost Lich he encountered...
Horsley (http://www.ralphhorsley.co.uk/)
"There were
many liches in silver robes, but in addition, there was a procession
of very tall liches dressed entirely in white with high top
hats and ivory canes. Their long faces were entirely white and
their eyes were nothing more than incandescent spots of icy
brilliance. They wandered down the street, with great plumes
of frost pouring out behind them.
"They are known as frost liches," Varia informed him
as one of the white-garbed liches walked past in a wash of cold."

A Magister from the
city of Vale.
You may be wondering
why there are no pictures of the main characters in this art
gallery. Well, I felt that to set their faces in stone would
be to ruin your own mental image, so I've avoided it so far.
It's far better to
make up your own mind as to how the characters look!

Alafraxicaar: the
mortal enemy of Creation.
You can all boo
now!
Purdy (http://www.scottpurdy.net/)
"In
excess of twelve feet tall, Alafraxicaar had a thin face and
dark amber eyes. He wore a pale robe that matched his pallid
features and had vicious metal fangs fixed into his thin, emotionless
mouth. He looked like a wraith, colourless and empty, with long
thin fingers and withered limbs.
The rage of the Void welled up in his wicked-seeming lidless
eyes and his fists constantly clenched together as a fragment
of sudden emotion overwhelmed him."

This guy is pretty
wicked (and I don't mean in the 'cool' sense).
Find out more about
him in Darkness Rises: The Great War.

A rather ghoulish
creature. This little guy was featured in The Lords of the Night:
Zombies. Interestingly enough, I did intend to add a zombie
character to the story in Darkness Rises: the Great War, but
decided against it last month.

The Keepers of Kethak,
complete with spears and creepy ragged hoods.
Allsop (http://www.daveallsop.co.uk/)
"They walked
further along, leaving the statue far behind. In the distance
they could see a great smooth wall of grey-black stone, and
atop it, they could spy the first proper signs of movement.
Along the city wall, and standing in two rows on either side
of the gates, were strange, black robed creatures. They stood
near-motionless, with great pointed spears at their sides. As
they drew nearer, Berren took a closer look at the guardians
of Kethak. They were ragged creatures, at least eight feet tall,
wearing long charcoal-black robes with deep hoods that utterly
concealed their features. They wore black leather gloves and
seemed to radiate an ancient feeling of menace. As they crossed
their path, Berren peered into one of their hoods and saw nothing
but shadow within."

This is the Void
Spider Berren encountered on the Spectral Plane.
Picture
by Scott Purdy (http://www.scottpurdy.net/)
"Berren
looked on in horror. It was definitely not a spider, nor was
it a living creature. It was perhaps ten feet long, with countless
compound eyes and a long angular body made up of a million fragments
of black and angular crystal. Varia backed off and hissed, and
the creature stepped forward, moving with terrifying agility
toward them."

A view of the Aedes
Singularis from outside. As you can see, it's huge!
Christian (http://www.elliotchristian.ca/)
"They stood
open-mouthed before the largest building they had ever seen.
"The Aedes Singularis," Varia said. "Seat of
the Conclave, my home, and it will be your home, too, for the
foreseeable future."
No one said anything. The great grey stone building was almost
skeletal in style, with countless towers and arched windows,
thin fluted columns and sharply pointed spires. It had a vast
number of towering pillars around its base, and balconies under
every window. Its highest towers vanished into the ashen skies."

Avystervan: the City
